Team Latvia is an exciting group of young people based in the town of Piņķi, near the capital city of Rīga. They are brought together by a love for tackling new challenges. Although they are all new to robotics, the team has received guidance from classmates who have done the FIRST Tech Challenge and Lego League. The team is united by three core principles: learning new things, valuing diversity, and cooperation via gracious professionalism.
Only five of the team members are able to travel. Reinis is the team captain, and a recent high school graduate; Rihards is the first driver and spokesperson for the team; Daria is the coach and designer of the robot’s lifting mechanism; Zifan is backup driver and mechanical expert; and Mackenzie is the programmer and second driver.
The rest of the team will be cheering from home: Mathilda is the outreach coordinator; Evalds is in charge of secret projects; Maria helped to design and build the drivetrain; Maka is our weaving expert; Nick helped with programming; and Alex, Jevgenijs, and Kimon consulted on mechanical issues. Latvia received valuable advice from mentor Steven Viola, and has been chaperoned by Danny Doucette.
We’ve had a tremendous build season, and have greatly enjoyed getting to know other teams. We cannot wait to participate in the FIRST Global Challenge 2017 in Washington, DC!
