Team Saint Lucia 2017

We are team Saint Lucia comprising of students Reshul Narhari, Keeghan Patrick and Shergaun Roserie from the Division of Arts, Sciences and General Studies of the Sir Arthur Lewis Community College (SALCC), guided by our coach, Mr. Loewenvell Polius.

Reshul (17), who won the National Award of Excellence for Mathematics in 2016 and 2017, is currently studying Chemistry, Physics and Pure Mathematics. She would like to pursue a career in Biomedical Engineering. She hopes to one day use the principles of engineering and medicine to further advance the diagnosis and treatment of medical diseases and disorders.

Keeghan Patrick (17), who won the 2015 Sagicor Visionaries Challenge, studies Economics, Physics and Pure Mathematics. He hopes to be an engineer and still keep the business side of his academic interest active. His aim is to develop more efficient technology and help promote renewable energy resources for a sustainable economy in the Caribbean.

Shergaun Roserie (17), who was president of the SMC Young Leaders and SMC Students Council, currently studies Chemistry, Physics and Pure Mathematics. He endeavours to be an electrical engineer and partake in groundbreaking projects and research to further the growth of our global community. He too has an interest in business, so would like to start a business centred on engineering.

Our journey as team St. Lucia dates back to July 2016 when we three were selected to participate in a programme called SPISE (Student Programme of Innovation in Science and Engineering). It is an intensive four-week summer programme for gifted high-school students who are interested in studying and exploring careers in science and engineering. We did courses in robotics, programming, calculus, physics, biochemistry, entrepreneurship, Caribbean unity and mandarin, out of which robotics seemed to catch our attention the most. After participating in this enriched programme our friendship and team spirit continued at SALCC where we began our first year. And now, we hope to keep this bond strong by working together and supporting each other in doing the best we can at this robotics competition, and in the future.

Team St. Lucia is honoured to have Mr. Polius as their coach as he is a Software Developer at the Ministry of education and has much experience in the field of engineering. We also appreciate the advice and knowledge we get from our mentors Mr. Travis Halls (Web Developer), Mr. Germain M. Anthony (Curriculum Specialist in Technology Integration), Quilee Simeon(Past SALCC student) and Dion Recai (SALCC student). Most of all, we would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Ms. Giannetti George (Curriculum Officer for the Natural Sciences) who handles all non-robotics related logistics of the team.

We are extremely grateful to be given this opportunity to be the pioneers of a robotics community in Saint Lucia by representing our beautiful island in the FIRST Global Robotics Challenge, 2017. We are eager to broaden our horizons in robotics by interacting with teams from all over the world who have a passion for science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) related areas, just as we do. Our goal is not only to do our best in this robotics competition, but also, to gain a deeper understanding of the true solutions to many of our world’s problems – it is, as First Global rightly said, by communicating, cooperating, and working together to apply technology as a tool for positive change in the world.
