Makerere University is the most dominant university in Uganda and one of the best institutions of higher learning in Africa. Since 2011, the University has been organizing the Science and Technology Challenge (STIC) in high schools throughout the Uganda. Each year the schools identify students who can assemble and program robots to perform some agreed tasks. Schools participate at regional levels and successful one are identified to compete at national level every year in October. These robotics competitions are done to inspire the young brains to appreciate Science, Technology and Innovation.
The Ugandan team coming to FIRST Global in July is the current champion who won in competitions in October 2016. The goal of bringing the young students to the United States is letting them network with their global peers, deepen their inspiration for Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, ICT and Innovation and expose them multi-cultural contexts which is a requirement in a globalized world.
