Team Africa 2018

We are a team of 3 girls ages 15 – 18 years from the Mozilla club of HackathonGirls Banjul with a mentor, Miss Juma Baldeh to represent Africa at the FIRST Global 2018 robotics competition in Mexico.

We started learning coding a year ago at the Mozilla club preceded by our Mentor, Miss Juma Baldeh where we learnt how to develop web pages using HTML and CSS, likeswise app development, though we don’t have any experience in robotics.

The Mozilla club of HackathonGirls is a club that teaches web literacy to girls ages 8 to 18 in the Gambia that is on how to read, write and participate on the web. The club also hopes to close the gender gap that exists and also to work on innovative projects that will advance equality in the Gambia.

We have done so many activities and workshops in the Gambia and have never participated in any international competitions which we are so delighted to be part of. We also feel so honored to be selected to represent Africa. With the skills we have already and the ones we will be learning, we hope to make Africa proud and come back to continue inspiring the next generation of girls in technology.

As girls we hope to inspire other African girls to go into the STEM fields and work hard. The FIRST Global 2018 experience will have a great impact on us as we will continue with robotics as we return and also teach other girls.
