Team Suriname 2019 🇸🇷

From Suriname to Washington DC in 2017 to Mexico City in 2018 and now, in 2019, on our way to Dubai (UAE)! Robotics Team Suriname has been there since the start of the FIRST Global Challenge (FGC) and continues to build robotics and innovation skills while reaching almost 350 young people in Suriname since 2017, creating awareness about the importance of technology and robotics for solving engineering challenges for real-life problems in our world.

As new students are mentored in developing robotics skills, the students from Suriname’s 2017 and 2018 robotics teams fulfilled on-the-job training as peer mentors. Ideation, finalization of team designs, conversion of designs to functional mechanical designs, programming and operating have been part of a process of trial and error alongside team building and learning to work together.

According to foundation YHS, the official counterpart of Suriname to FG, the FGC games are not only the highlight for a young person to have a lifetime global inspirational experience amidst 160+ countries, but they’re also a lot about the students and mentors becoming aware of the many opportunities of collaboration in the field of technology, innovation and robotics. FG is a platform for opening doors of global cooperation and this is why YHS makes an effort to train students so that Suriname may be represented, identify the possibilities and make a contribution in the near future. We are looking forward to being on the ‘Ocean Opportunities FG Game field’ this October working together in alliances and simultaneously competing with other alliances.

This year’s team is mentored by lead mentor Dr. Daniel Lachman, assistant technical mentor Ayan Jhagroe, lead programming mentor Shayant Sital, peer mentors: Lesley Uiterloo and Ivana Codrington. Ashna Mahepal fulfills the role of Project Manager and Team Manager, supported by junior coordinator Shivani Jhagroe.

The 5 students selected to represent Suriname at the 2019 FGC are:

Jeremy Richaards (16 years old male; Robot Builder and Programmer)
As a kid, Jeremy loved the idea of being able to assemble phones, laptops, and different kinds of electronics. Nowadays his interest has grown to include developing applications, games and different types of programs. Robotics for him is a perfect opportunity to learn both.

Armelle Hijmans (16 years old female; Robot Builder)
Armelle likes to read books and watch movies, and is very enthusiastic about learning new stuff like robotics. In the future she wants to build robots for environmental purposes like cleaning oceans, which is very well aligned with this year’s FGC theme “Ocean Opportunities”.

Vyash Hirasingh (18 years old male; Robot Builder)
Vyash has been interested in technology ever since he can remember; his building skills can be quickly noticed from his enthusiasm and love for constructing. He likes to play soccer, volunteer for charity work, and hang out and have fun with his family and friends.

Sergio Satijo (18 years old male; Robot Builder and Programmer)
Sergio’s hobbies are amateur photography, video editing, playing games, and sports. By participating in this challenge, he wants to inspire people to keep the oceans clean so we can make the world a better place for everyone.

Joel Naarendorp (18 years old male; robot builder)
Joel believes that robotics is one of the key factors in the future of automation and thinks that robots should not be seen as a threat to job availability, but more as an opportunity for new exciting possibilities. In his spare time, he plays the guitar, watches soccer, and goes to the gym.

The team likes to express appreciation for the support of YHS volunteers, friends, family, FG Staff, the Government of Dubai and recognizes the valuable and important contributions from organizations such as the IDB, Staatsolie, Baitali Group of Companies, the American Embassy, Mr. Ashwin Adhin and RCM N.V. without which Suriname’s participation would not be on its way to being possible. Appreciation also goes to the schools and institutions who worked with us to allow the students leave from school, helped process passports ect.
