Youth from Sherbrooke closely follow the new Governor General Julie Payette

Translated from French.

The role of Governor General has suddenly become of interest to young people at the Séminaire de Sherbrooke. The winners of the gold medal at the most recent First Global competition, held in Washington last July, had the opportunity to meet astronaut Julie Payette, who is now 29th Governor General of Canada.

At the time of their meeting with the astronaut, her appointment was known to the public. However, the subject has not been discussed since Julie Payette wanted to take a closer look at their robotics project and their results. The youth were the only participants from Canada at the world robotic Olympiad.

The teacher who accompanied the group, Francys Gauthier, emphasizes that these moments spent with Julie Payette talking about science and technology will remain engraved for a long time in the memory of his students. “She encouraged us and said, ‘Go team Canada!’ She told the youth that they were the future and we felt behind our team,” says the robotics manager of the Séminaire de Sherbrooke.

“It was great! It is impressive because she has gone into space and it makes me want to follow her path now that she is Governor General of Canada.” — Logan Cadorette, student at the Séminaire de Sherbrooke.

“We were not interested in this position before, but now that we know the Governor General, and that we know she wants to innovate and that she loves science, it is certain that we will follow her career within the government more closely,” explains Raphaël Bisson, pupil of fifth secondary.
