Seeds planted by\u00a0FIRST<\/em>\u00a0Global in the hearts of students are blossoming into leaders who are entrepreneurs, advocates, and mentors just six years after the inaugural\u00a0FIRST<\/em> Global Challenge. Here is the story of Emanuel from Venezuela.<\/p>\n

Emanuel from Venezuela<\/h3>\n

Emanuel Andrade, a 2017 alumnus, is another example of the impact\u00a0FIRST<\/em>\u00a0Global alumni are having around the world.<\/p>\n

When Emanuel joined the inaugural\u00a0FIRST<\/em> Global Team Venezuela, he had no prior experience with robotics and did not consider himself a STEM advocate.<\/p>\n

\u201cI always had a curiosity for electronics but never had the opportunity for testing that\u2026 but\u00a0FIRST<\/em>\u00a0Global gave me that opportunity. For me,\u00a0FIRST<\/em>\u00a0Global literally changed my life. I went from being a high school student to being an advocate for changing the culture of my country.\u201d<\/strong><\/h5>\n

Since 2019, he has served as\u00a0FIRST<\/em>\u00a0Global Team Venezuela\u2019s primary mentor and, like Keeghan, his experience at the 2017 Challenge directly influenced his work spreading STEM opportunities in his country.<\/p>\n

\u201cI remember seeing all those robots and saying \u2018wow, it\u2019s amazing what they can build,\u2019 and I said \u2018I know that our people can do that too.\u2019 So I want[ed] to learn more so I can share with more people.\u201d<\/p>\n

Just this year, Emanuel and Team Venezuela made a major advancement: hosting their first-ever national selection tournament with over 130 students in attendance from 16 schools, both public and private.<\/p>\n

\u201cBefore 2022 there had never been a robotics competition in Venezuela so we did a pilot edition, but this year we wanted to do it bigger\u2026 so we are really happy with the progress that we\u2019ve made.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hosting this tournament and gaining publicity for youth robotics was seen by\u00a0FIRST<\/em>\u00a0Global Team Venezuela as important because of the skills students develop participating.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s an accelerator for mechanics, programming, and the technical parts, but also for working in groups, managing stress, managing time, and managing resources\u2026\u00a0It can change your mindset. It can change how you think and how you see the world.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

This year, all of their hard work paid off big; their team won the highest\u00a0FIRST<\/em>\u00a0Global honor\u2014the Albert Einstein Award for\u00a0FIRST<\/em>\u00a0Global International Excellence.<\/p>\n

Reflecting on how robotics in Venezuela has changed since 2017, Emanuel shared, \u201cNow seeing that we have teams in Venezuela that got sponsored\u2014that companies are helping them, that schools are committed to\u00a0FIRST<\/em>\u2014it shows how important\u00a0FIRST<\/em>\u00a0Global has been in this country, and I know that this is the way that other countries can have it too.\u201d<\/p>\n
