المكسيك — The talent and ingenuity of the young Mexicans will once again meet to participate in the Robotics World Cup “FIRST Global Challenge 2018″, which in its second edition will take place at the Mexico City Arena.
And for this, as in the previous event, of a large number of applicants, five young people have been selected from different educational levels offered by the Tec de Monterrey in Chihuahua and Mexico City.
By sharing the experience that has involved supporting these five talents, Juan Pablo Prieto Padilla, one of the three mentors who advise the Mexican Team, reveals that there is no better example of the potential of Mexican youth than this quintet whose ages range from 15 and 17 years old.
And, to participate in this event, the interested parties had to compete in a first contest in which their first challenge “was to assemble in a period of four hours a robot that normally takes the teams to assemble and design in four or five weeks. “
This is how it was decided to select these five young people among whom is Frida Sofía Sosa Luviano, who will study Engineering in Telecommunications and Electronic Systems at the Technological Institute of Higher Studies Monterrey (ITESEM), in the Campus of Mexico City.
In an interview with Notimex, the young woman revealed that participating in this contest is a source of pride, since with it “we can show people that in robotics anyone can participate no matter how old they are”.
For Sosa Luivano, one of the keys has been the love of mathematics, science and technology, which he fell in love with when he saw the various competitions and events that took place in that area.
This is how, without hesitation, Frida Sofía joined the robotics team when she entered high school, “since I understood that through science and technology I can help more people who need it, and that is my main motivation, the to be able to help others. “
Not for nothing, among its aspirations for the future is to make designs for the field of medicine, thinking in particular about the creation of a prosthesis whose costs are more accessible and its operation is more efficient, so that people with fewer resources can access one.
Of course, for these young people, a key to have been inclined to participate and prepare in the field of robotics have been both their mentors and their families, since it is through their support is that they have been passionate about this subject.
Santiago Garcia Garcia, 17 years old and from Prepa Tec, in Mexico City, explains that much of the support he has received both financially and emotionally has come from his parents, but also from his teachers, who have also introduced to the field of robotics.
And, for Santiago, one of the main obstacles facing young Mexicans is precisely the fear of venturing into sophisticated areas such as science or mathematics where a large part fail because they do not even see with sympathy this matter.
This is where teachers play a key role, because “some teachers do not have the passion to teach young people to make a change in the world,” and as a result, far from being attracted to these subjects, they end up feeling rejected.
He also considered that another obstacle facing Mexico, as in many parts of the world is the economic, so an event of the nature of First Global Challenge is ideal to boost talent in areas such as science and technology.

On the other hand, when speaking about his participation in this year’s contest, Jorge Humberto García, a student at Tec de Monterrey High School in Chihuahua, explained that the key to winning this meeting will always be ingenuity and creativity.
For this, he said, First Global proposed a challenge from 14 programs and that led to the theme of “Impact energy”, for which a game was defined with rules to participate in conditions of equality.
This is how all the participants receive the same kit to avoid money being a factor in determining the competition, because “if it’s about money, obviously a country with better resources like the United States will win, against one that is not so favored”.
From there, is that as a team “we made many prototypes and tested many mechanisms, and now we have a robot that works very well, and we hope it is better than the others,” he said proudly.
Germán Sánchez, a student of the Prepa Tec Campus Chihuahua, explained that the competition will consist of forming two sides, “one blue and one red”, consisting of three countries each side and will be selected randomly, that is why “we still do not know with whom we are going to collaborate and against whom we are going to compete “.
These groups will have three challenges that will consist in putting their robots to work in three challenges in which 48 cardboard cubes of 15 by 15 will be placed in a certain area, they will install solar panels in another and finally they will activate a wind generator.
He explained that the cubes represent the sources of fossil energy, which of course are limited and finite, while the solar panels and the wind generator represent renewable energy.
Ángel Eduardo Berbejena Domíngez, of the Tec de Monterrey Campus Chihuahua explained that the important thing of this event is to encourage competition, for which each team will have to develop their own robots that will be responsible for this task and that in the end will be evaluated by the speed and efficiency with which they are developed.
Also, another key to winning is the ability to organize between the blue and white teams, considering that they are members from different countries, so “a key element is to maintain good communication between all teams.”
He also said that the intention is to help raise awareness about the importance of the use of smart energy, as well as the impact it can generate by continuing to use energy from dirty sources such as fossils.
In addition, the participation of these young people will not only be limited to the competition that will take place next August, but also will seek to promote the dissemination through social networks to invite more and more young people to participate.
That is why Frida Sofía added that spaces have been created on Facebook and Twitter where, through the hashtag # TeamMéxicoFGC and #MundialDeRobotica, videos are broadcast daily to answer all questions about robots.
“Because something that is also very important for our team is to help others, share a little of what we know and that they can tell us a little about what they know,” he added.
