Robotics to be an official sport in Belize

At the beginning of the week, the Minister of Youth, Sports, and Transport, Hon. Rodwell Ferguson, announced to the country that Belize will be one of the first countries in the world to make robotics an official national sport. In addition to robotics becoming an official sport in Belize, the National Robotics Federation was launched, with the official documentation being handed to the principal of Belize High School (BHS), Jamie Usher. For over a decade, BHS has been the only educational institution in the country to establish an unconventional after-school program, and they have proudly reaped the fruit of their labors, as they have competed in several international robotics competitions throughout those years.

“Robotics wasn’t experienced by everyone, so, having it as a sport allows a lot of people who do not have the opportunity to see or hear anything about robotics to be able to be a part of this larger community that we want to manage, to ensure that there’s a lot of people that have access to the opportunities that we have at this school,” said Gustavo Carillo, Head of the BHS Department of Information Technology.
