Three Gambian girls to represent Africa at international robotics competition

Three Gambian teenage girls between the ages of 15 and 18 have been selected to represent the continent of Africa at the FIRST Global Challenge 2018 International Robotics Competition in Mexico in August.

Amie Sankareh, Vanessa Williams and Ida Camara and their mentor, Juma Baldeh will depart The Gambia on the 15th August for the week-long competition.

According to Juma, the girls are excited to compete in the FIRST Global Challenge 2018 International Robotics Competition, which is expected to bring together high school students from different countries, aiming to increase their knowledge of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), so they can become the next generation of scientific leaders.

“I run a club called Mozilla Club of HackathonGirls and First Global reached out to me. So I selected the best three girls from the age of 15 to 18 doing well in the club to go for it.”

Juma added: “Whatever happens, it will be a good learning experience for us. There will be young people from all over the work, but we will do our best to win.”

The organisers, FIRST Global’s mission is to convince the youth of the world to appreciate the tools of STEM, and to show them that if they learn to communicate, cooperate and work together, they will be able to make exciting innovations, ranging from clean water to food security, which if solved, will make the world a better place for everyone.
