Team Fiji 2019 🇫🇯

Being a small island country in South Pacific, we believe that the theme for this year of “Ocean Opportunities” is very apt to the Pacific Island countries. The ocean is an integral part of the livelihood of the people residing in most villages in Fiji. People depend on the ocean and its resources for food and income. However, people fail to realize that some of their actions are putting the ocean and its resources in danger and in the years to come, these resources will no longer be available. Sea creatures such as turtles are on the verge of extinction due the actions of humans. Pollutants, specifically plastics, dumped into the sea harm these creatures. Fortunately, some major food businesses in Fiji have resorted to using substitutes for plastic straws and food packets.

Being part of this year’s FIRST Global Challenge will give us the opportunity to better understand how technology-driven solutions will help to overcome the problem of ocean pollution and save the ocean animals from extinction.

Our goal for Team Fiji is to work with relevant authorities and develop a means of cleaning up the ocean in a short period of time, and also to create a mechanism that would ensure that people do not dump their rubbish carelessly into the ocean.
