FIRST Global Announces U.S. Department of Energy’s Support for 2023 Renewable Energy Challenge in Singapore

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Washington, D.C. – FIRST Global is pleased to partner with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) for the 2023 FIRST Global Challenge, which will be hosted in Singapore from October 7-10, 2023. The DOE is providing sponsorship and in-kind support for the event, which brings together youth from over 190 countries to compete in a robotics game around the theme of renewable energy.

This year’s Challenge focuses specifically on the role of hydrogen in the planet’s renewable energy and reduced carbon future. Through this partnership, FIRST Global and the DOE aim to advance worldwide awareness and involvement with renewable energy and inspire the next generation of problem solvers to tackle the globe’s energy challenges using science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

“The world is facing an urgent need to reduce our carbon footprint and transition to more sustainable energy sources,” said Dean Kamen, founder of FIRST Global. “We are excited to have the support of the U.S. Department of Energy to help us equip the world’s youth to advance renewable energy and hydrogen technologies.”

The 2023 theme invites students to personally engage their creativity and problem-solving skills to design and build a robot for the Hydrogen Horizons game. On the simulated playing field, each robot must then produce hydrogen and use it to store, transport, and convert energy.

“DOE is committed to development of clean, affordable, and reliable hydrogen technologies,” said DOE’s Assistant Secretary for Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Alejandro Moreno. “We are proud to support FIRST Global and their efforts to inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers to lead the effort toward a more sustainable energy future.”

The 2023 FIRST Global Challenge provides a platform for participants to develop and showcase their robotics and engineering skills while benefiting from industry leaders. As part of the New Technology Experience, students will learn about recent developments in clean energy and develop their own innovative solutions to implement and improve access to sustainable energy within their communities and nations. They will also have the opportunity to benefit from interactive webinars and courses.
