Team Micronesia 2017

As a Small Island Developing State, the Federated States of Micronesia are going to be among the first to need to adapt to the impending effects of global climate change. Team Micronesia was thrilled to be invited to participate in the 2017 FIRST Global Challenge to represent their community of islands on the international stage. All team members are students at Yap Catholic High School, where the STEM and Robotics Program was born in 2011 thanks to the non-profit organization: Habele. On the island of Yap, traditional culture continues to thrive even as the islands of Micronesia adapt to the modern world. Members of Team Micronesia still utilize cultural skills such as spear fishing, basket weaving, and traditional navigation and carving of sailing canoes. These traditional skills give them a unique perspective when constructing their robots and developing modern STEM-oriented skills. With a combination of traditional practices and modern technology, the islands of Micronesia hope to continue to develop into a unique, thriving culture.
