Team Costa Rica 2018

Limón is the number seven Province of Costa Rica, located in the Caribbean and responsible for more than 86% of the import and export of the country, however it is the most lagging economic, social and infrastructure. The city is separated from the sea by the “tajamar” that runs along its coast in the urban area. As a result of its demographic explosion, Puerto Limón has seen the number of its neighborhoods grow, and in general the province of Limón has the highest demographic growth rate in Costa Rica.

Eleven years ago the Public Library of Limón created an agreement with the Embassy of the United States of America in San Jose, Costa Rica and created a space called the “American Corner”, a library and youth center that provides services ranging from bilingual books to robotics workshops in more recent years.

The participation of the Team Costa Rica in the 2018 FIRST Global Challenge will be possible thanks to the parents of the children, to the Embassy of the United States in San Jose, Costa Rica, to the staff of the American Corner Limón, to the Manager of the Club — Mrs. Hermelinda McKenzie Williams, and the Coordinator of the AC, this year composed of the following members:

Joustin Romero Umaña, Colegio Sagrada Familia
Johary Hunter Maxwell, Colegio Sagrada Familia
David Lacelle Rojas García, Colegio Técnico Profesional de Limón
Carlos Daniel Umaña Alvarado, Colegio Sagrada Familia

Mentor: Prof. Dwayne Mattis Pinnock, Tecnológico de Costa Rica

Our team members are enthusiastic to participate so they can learn more about robotics, build solar cars, and improve their leadership skills and confidence in working with technology. They plan to take their experience in FIRST Global and apply it in the community through workshops for children.
