Team Armenia 2019 🇦🇲

Barev dzez! You just learned your first word in Armenian, which means hello.

Situated along the route of the Great Silk Road, Armenia is a landlocked country of rugged mountains and extinct volcanoes, located in the southern Caucasus, between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea. Bounded by Georgia in the north, Azerbaijan on the east, Iran on the south, and Turkey on the west, Armenia has a population of just 3 million people and the capital and largest city Yerevan. Modern Armenia comprises only a small portion of ancient Armenia, one of the world’s oldest centers of civilization. Alongside with being the first country to adopt Christianity as the state religion, Armenia also owns the world’s oldest church and is one of the first producers of its worldwide known wine.

Team Armenia consists of four students from United World Colleges (UWC) Dilijan College and one student from the MIT FabLab of Dilijan. The team consists of Can from Turkey, Hashim from Jordan, Ernest from Luxemburg, Chadi from Morocco, and Narek from Armenia. Our mentors are Stefan from Denmark and Roza from Turkey. Even though each member comes from a different country with different backgrounds and experiences, we managed to become a team under the roof of living in Armenia and passion we share towards STEAM, robotics, and technology. Team Armenia was formed with the initiatives and continuous efforts of FIRST alumni Roza and Can to bring the FIRST movement to Armenia and quickly turned into a collaboration project between UWC Dilijan and MIT FabLab of Dilijan.

UWC Dilijan holds the mission statement of a global education movement that makes education a force to unite people, nations, and cultures for peace and a sustainable future while representing an exciting extension of the UWC movement. It is a two-year boarding International Baccalaureate Diploma school with 229 students coming from 80 countries. MIT FabLab is an initiative by MIT which gives its users around the world the ability to locally conceptualize, design, develop, fabricate, and test almost anything. MIT FabLab Dilijan fosters this innovation in the local community by teaching local kids about robotics, programming, and developing projects.

Even though the Team Armenia is founded very recently, with its members sharing a common interest and strong collaboration representing the importance of the local unity and engagement; we are more than excited to have the chance to be a part of the FIRST movement and represent this beautiful country in the 2019 FIRST Global Challenge.
