25 Jul Team Botswana 2019 🇧🇼
Team Botswana is made up of two girls and three boys, who are all form 4 (grade 11) students at Kagiso Senior School. Their mentors are all teachers of Computer Studies in the same school. From the rolling hills of the south eastern part, to the shifting sand dunes of the Kalahari desert, from the world’s largest inland delta, the Okavango, to the highest point in Botswana in the Tsodilo hills, to the the indigenous rock paintings, Botswana has rich cultural diversity and natural resources. Seventy percent of the prime land has been reserved for wildlife and has the highest population of elephants. The country was able to move from being one of the poorest countries at independence, to a middle income economy. The leaders of the country have done well. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said about STEM development in terms of Science, Technology and Innovation. The country, although it has so many raw materials and is an importer of almost everything. Young minds need to get to work and see how they can convert this natural resources into products ready for consumption. With the introduction of robotics and coding, the country can gear itself for the knowledge economy and the fourth industrial revolution. The youth of Botswana, in collaboration with the youth of the world, can come together and critically think of the solutions to the problems that currently assail us. This year’s theme of Ocean opportunities is especially relevant to our country, which has very little water. We cannot afford to lose any to pollution. If we have any polluted water sources, we need to find a way of cleaning the pollutants. We can find a solution to the world water crisis if we put our heads together. Every citizen of the world and the wild and marine life, all deserve clean water. Clean water is a right for every citizen of the world.
