Hello! We are team Korea.
We are quite a big group with a total of 14 members.
Let me introduce our outstanding members of the team.
The leader of the Korea team is Andrew Park, a senior in Iolani school. He oversees the overall aspect of the competitions and makes sure that the teammates are all on the right track. Andrew has prior experience with last year’s FIRST Global Challenge, so he volunteered to lead the team through the challenges this year. Andrew claims that his academic interests are Earth science, especially volcanoes, and East Asian culture/history. He also enjoys sports such as basketball and waterski. Another strong passion he has is 3D Art.
The team has three branches of smaller groups: CubeSat, Robotics, and Solution Challenge. We took advantage of our team size and specified the roles depending on each member’s abilities and passions. Most students participate in the Solution Challenge and additionally work on other projects.
The CubeSat team is composed of multiple brillant men: Justin Kim, Xavier Bang, JP Lee, Seungho Kang, and William Kim.
Xavier Bang, a rising sophomore in St. Johnsbury Academy Jeju, leads this team. He is interested in Computer Science, Economics, and fencing. One fun fact about Xavier is that if he gets interested in something, he puts his entire soul into it. “Get ready FIRST Global. Korea is coming. I’ll pour everything I can to become one of the top teams,” said Xavier, showing his determination. He actively participates and shows immense passion by recording every step leading to the results.
Justin Kim is a rising Junior at BC Collegiate. He is passionate about science and policy, and one fun fact about him is that he knows a lot about the environmental policies of each country. Justin showed his confidence by saying, “If I do my best and work hard with my teammates, we will be able to do well in this tournament.”
JP Lee, a rising Junior attending TAS, is greatly interested in Robotics and Computer Science. He wants to become an architect in the future and he feels honored to represent South Korea on the global stage. He shows enthusiasm by actively participating in discussions.
Seungho Kang is a rising junior at St. John’s School. His academic interest is inventing, and his non-academic interest is in collecting model trains. One fun fact about him is that he owns two dogs, one is a pomeranian and the other is a beagle mix. He also possesses great positivity that invigorates other team members. His resolution towards the competition portrays his optimism: “Keep it funny and sunny!”
William Kim is a rising sophomore attending Korean International School (KIS). He likes biology, chemistry and enjoys playing volleyball and Ice Hockey, which he played for 9 years. William said, “I will do my best so that we can receive good results!” He is keeping his words through his active participation.
The Robotics Team consists of gifted young people: Lucia Han, Andrew Park, Jungwoo Lee, Eddy Kim, Eric Chang.
Lucia Han, a rising junior attending Brooks School, leads this Robotics team. Some of her academic interests are math, chemistry, computer science, and non-academic interests are volleyball, squash, and arts and crafts. A fun fact about her is that her favorite pizza is Hawaiian pizza. Lucia’s goal for this competition is to gain valuable experiences and learn many things. She said that she will do her best to receive satisfactory results, which is reflected in her zestful engagements in discussions and constructing robots.
Jungwoo Lee is a rising freshman at Seoul International School. He likes Math and Chemistry academically, and badminton non-academically. A fun fact about Jungwoo is that he loves playing chess. He says that it is a great honor to take part in such a competition, and he will do his best accordingly.
Eddy Kim is a rising sophomore at Tabor Academy. He shows great interest in math and soccer. One fun fact about him is that he has visited more than 6 countries. “I want to try a subject that I have never experienced before and to get good results,” Eddy said. Despite the fact that it is his first attempt, he is performing well and taking his responsibilities.
Eric Chang, a rising junior at Seoul International School, is passionate about Economics, Biology, Engineering, and Basketball. Eric said, “I will put my full efforts into the FIRST Global Challenge and have a great experience throughout the journey.” He is indeed putting in his full efforts.
Alex Chung is a rising junior attending Avon Old Farms School. He is interested in Biology, Math, fashion, and culture. An interesting fact about him is that he is a varsity swimmer at school! Alex also possesses great positivity, which is shown through his words: I’ll do my best and dedicate myself to the team for good results. Even if we don’t get a prize, I hope we can learn something valuable through this experience.”
The Solutions Challenge team is again divided into Engineering group and App, Web design team based on individual’s interests. Chloe Lee, Mike Yang, Seungho Kang, Justin Kim, Andrew Park, Eddy Kim, Alex Chung, Eric Chang, and William Kim are participating in the engineering part. JP Lee, Chloe Lee, Mike Yang, Lucia Han, Xavier Bang, Ryan Kim are working on the app and web part of the program.
Chloe Lee is a rising junior at Hong Kong International School. Her academic interests include chemistry and math. In terms of her non-academic interests, Chloe is passionate about fashion and loves to travel with family. One fun fact about her is that she has an extreme phobia of cats. Her attitude towards the FIRST Global Challenge is impressive: “I am super honored to be a part of the 2021 FIRST Global Challenge as a representative of Korea. From this opportunity, I hope to gain more experience and knowledge in the field of STEM and promise to try my best and fully commit to my duties as a member of this team.”
Mike Yang is a rising junior attending Westminster School located in Simsbury, Connecticut. He is interested in Sports, Fashion, Biology, and History. Mike loves playing soccer, basketball, and lacrosse. “I really hope we as a group can come up with a great final product. Even though we don’t, I believe that we all can learn and develop from this experience,” Mike said.
Ryan Kim, a rising freshman at NLCS Jeju, is interested in arts and plastic modeling. An interesting fact about him is that he has attended the FIRST LEGO League in the past. “Since it’s a great opportunity, I would like to achieve as many goals and gain as many experiences as possible.”
Each member is making a great contribution to the team, allowing us to advance towards the ultimate goal of receiving satisfactory results. The thorough specialization of the team exhibits our efficiency of completing tasks and how well-organized the team is. All members put all their efforts in and function as a crucial piece of the system to contribute to completing the big picture. We will try our best to present outstanding performances and yield great results.
