Team Suriname 2022 🇸🇷

Ever since we participated in the inaugural FIRST Global in 2017, Team Suriname has embraced the mission of FIRST Global to inspire young leadership and innovation throughout Suriname and abroad. By practical skills development, teamwork and (cross-border) collaboration we encourage young minds to believe in their dreams and achieve great things. This is why each year we recruit new students and empower them with a robotics foundation using STEM education. We additionally trigger young role model behavior by creating awareness in communities and schools in and outside the capital Paramaribo. After our in-house prep we assemble a team to represent Suriname at FGC. This can be a combination of either all new students or a mix.

Our mentors are students who have participated in previous FGC and have remained connected and involved as volunteers to share their knowledge with the new students. We believe that our peer mentoring set-up is a corner stone in the sustainability of FGC in Suriname. This year our team is led by one of the students that participated in 2017 and who remained involved ever since. Ayan Jhagroe is the lead mentor while Ashna Mahepal is the team Manager, also since 2017.

For student team members we have:

Aryan Sewdin. He loves playing games, is into flower photography and building all kinds of creations with Lego. He was part of FGC2021. The team ended up ranking number 42 on the list of 177. Aryan hopes to learn even more about building robots and looks forward to having even more fun at FGC 2022. He aspires to become a software developer or electrical engineer if not both.

Dija Ramsoedit’s hobbies include basketball, coding, astrophysics, astrophotography, cooking, baking and watching movies. She is looking forward to meeting new people, exploring her interests, developing skills and ultimately being able to give back to her community. She would like to work in the field of computer science and also hopes to complete some type of cinema studies.

Eleanor Lokhai
Eleanor’s hobbies include reading, writing and especially watching tv shows and movies because they trigger her creativity. She has been writing since she was 13 and has always been interested in STEM mostly because the technology side, which keeps innovating, has always fascinated her. She expects this dynamic to keep her from getting bored. She loves robotics because it’s fun but also very educational and forces her to think outside of the box and work together with others. In the near future she sees herself as a software engineer or a project manager for tech related projects, but also as an author because of her love for writing.

Youri Karijopawiro
Youri’s hobbies are: programming, gaming, solving rubik’s cubes and reading. His favourite genre of books are fantasy books, because they allow a persons imagination and creativity to be limitless. Video games brushed up his problem solving skills and upgraded his creativity. His favourite video game is Minecraft, because it allows freedom in what you want to do as a player and it also has a very technical side to it. Youri wants to become a software engineering/system development finding solutions to difficult problems.

Shayden Schenker
Shayden enjoys playing video games and working out in his free time. He finds robotics interesting because of the automation side. He believes that the planet we live on can be kept clean with the help of robots. Shayden chose to join FGC because it’s his first step in building robots. In the future he hopes to become an engineer and design solutions that will keep Suriname clean.

Ayan Jhagroe (the team lead mentor; robot builder)
Ayan’s hobbies include playing and listening to music. He also likes watching movies and TV shows. He is a Mechanical Engineering student at the local University. His fascination of the concepts FIRST Global presents each year, has kept him engaged in mentoring Robotics students for the past 3 years. Advancements in technology have a big impact and we’ll need to manipulate our skills to match this change accordingly. For me, the space between the knowledge received in the education system and the skills demanded by society can be filled by Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). This is also where participating in The FGC has helped and in addition gaining useful skills such as critical thinking, collaboration and problem-solving. The FGC has brought up new interests in me for STEM related projects and helping the robotics team in Suriname. Putting my hard skills in physics and mathematics to the test, but in the process building up my soft skills. And of course, because I get the chance to meet like-minded people in Suriname but also from everywhere in the world and exchange knowledge’’.
