19 May Team Cayman Islands 2023 🇰🇾
We are Team Cayman Islands, comprised of high school students and FIRST Tech Challenge competitors from six Cayman Islands high schools. Our team consists of 6 members ranging from 15 to 17 years old. Cayman’s FIRST robotics journey began when the Cayman Islands participated in the 2018 FIRST Global Challenge in Mexico City. Following that event, the Cayman Islands began a FIRST Tech interschool program that included all Cayman Islands high schools. Our national team has representation from each of our high schools – uniting as one team.
Brought together because of our passion for robotics we share a love for STEM and tech innovation. As a team we spread STEM knowledge through community outreach, our five corporate partners, and by inspiring Cayman’s youth. We are excited that FIRST Global provides us with a platform to help raise awareness of the need for technology education in schools. As a small island, that is dependent primarily on fossil fuels, we understand the importance of revolutionizing innovative renewable energy technologies such as hydrogen to ensure a cleaner and more equitable energy future for all.
Maxwell Clarke
Was born in the Cayman Islands and is 16 years old. He has been involved in robotics and robotics competitions every year since 7th grade beginning in Atlanta, Georgia and then moving back home to Cayman and pursuing competition on the island. Before joining his school’s team in 7th grade he was interested in robotics and STEAM for years. Always been interested in learning more about coding and engineering from a young age, he enjoys the process of understanding objects and concepts. Max is currently a rising Grade 11 student at Cayman International School and will take on the job of co-leading his schools FTC robotics program. Max’s dream career has always been in engineering, and he believes that the FIRST programs will help him better achieve this goal.
Isaiah Myles
Is 14 years old and attends John Gray High School in the Cayman Islands. With a large array of interests, including aviation, swimming, music, and, of course, robotics. Robotics is intriguing to Isaiah because whilst building and designing a robot, he is also learning fundamental skills such as teamwork, communication, and strategizing. Isaiah believes robotics can lead to many career opportunities, especially ones in his ‘dream’ career of aviation. He is looking forward to the FIRST Global Challenge because he believes it would be a great experience meeting people of various cultural backgrounds, and to also compete amongst different countries, showing that the Cayman Islands, a small island in the Caribbean, can compete against much bigger nations in a global competition. Isaiah feels it’s a privilege and honor to be a part of the National Robotics Team and he looks forward to the journey ahead.
Garrison French
Garrison is proud to be a member of the Cayman Islands National Robotics Team. He is advancing to year 10 at Clifton Hunter High School. The subjects he likes are science, math, and technology education. In his spare time he plays a variety of sports, including football, basketball, and swimming. Garrison joined robotics because he finds it fascinating, fun and interesting. He is interested in a career in the engineering area and believes that robotics can take him there. He looks forward to the trip to Singapore and competing on the global stage and feels it will be a great experience seeing different countries and cultures represented. Meeting with and learning from other students my age from across the globe is an experience that I know will be memorable.
Joshua Williams
Is sixteen years old and attends Sixth Form at Cayman Prep and High School in the Cayman Islands. Josh has always been interested in robotics and being an MEP engineer in the future has always been his career goal. Coding is a hobby of Josh’s and he enjoys creating games as parodies of already existing games through python in text format or building his own games through unity with C#. Josh watches and plays basketball (his favourite sport) and he is also interested in UFC. Josh is looking forward to FGC because he has never visited Asia and thinks being in the competition would be an experience of a lifetime.
Amiya Tahal
Amiya is 15 years old and is a year 11 student at Triple C School in the Cayman Islands. STEM has fascinated her since primary school and robotics has allowed her to explore it further into robotics. Building and designing robots for competitions has been an amazing experience for Amiya who is thrilled to attend this year’s FIRST Global competition. Amiya looks forward to seeing the innovative robot designs from all the other countries as they take on the challenge.
Sophia Villarin
Sophia represents St. Ignatius Catholic School in this year’s National Robotics Team. She is 16 years old and will enter year 12 this upcoming school year. Hobbies that Sophia enjoys are art and music, as well as occasional volleyball. Sophia is focusing her career path on medicine and is intrigued by how robotics can be implemented into healthcare (whether directly or via learnt skills). Sophia’s robotics journey began in 2021 school’s robotics team as young apprentices, where she was a part of building her first FTC robot. Sophia looks forward to what the FIRST Global Challenge in Singapore has in store and is excited not only to meet so many people from around the world who share the same interest in robotics as her, but also to enjoy our trip on the other side of the earth with my team, who I may grow to be able to call a second family.
Thank you to our supporters!
