Team Djibouti 2025 🇩🇯

Djibouti is a land of extremes and contrasts. Situated at the heart of the Afar Triple Junction, it lies where three tectonic plates, Nubian, Somali, and Arabian, slowly drift apart. Over millions of years, this remarkable process is creating a new ocean, a “continent in motion,” while dramatic landscapes like the Lac Assal depression showcase the Earth’s raw energy. At the same time, Djibouti is one of the driest countries in Africa. Rainfall is scarce, agriculture is nearly impossible, and the few ephemeral rivers rarely reach the sea. Daily survival depends on innovation and resourcefulness, turning scarcity into an opportunity for creativity.

Yet, Djibouti’s waters tell a very different story. Its strategic position at the junction of the Red Sea, the Gulf of Aden, and the Indian Ocean nurtures rich, nutrient-filled seas. Vibrant coral reefs teem with thousands of species, while whale sharks, the largest fish on the planet, migrate annually through its waters. Fishing is not only a way of life but a vital source of local nutrition. This stark contrast between arid land and abundant sea defines Djibouti’s ecological identity and points to the enormous potential of marine-based innovation, from sustainable aquaculture to environmental monitoring of coastal ecosystems.

In this extraordinary context, Team Djibouti brings together young STEM enthusiasts committed to turning challenges into solutions. Each member contributes unique talents in robotics, coding, biology, design, and problem-solving. They are developing robots to monitor water quality, optimize local resources, and explore new ways to leverage Djibouti’s marine wealth sustainably. Habsane Ismaël Abdi, 17, combines programming with a dream of becoming a cardiac surgeon. Nasima Abass Mohamed, 14, is fascinated by AI and science. Barack Ahmed Houssein, 16, AMO 2024 medalist in Qatar, for the International Mathematics Day, focuses on coding and data science. Mariama Saïd Ali and Moustapha Ahmed Youssouf, both 17, bridges biology and design to solve environmental problems.

Through creativity, collaboration, and resilience, Team Djibouti demonstrates that even a small, resource-limited nation can inspire global solutions. By embracing the lessons of its land, its seas, and its people, the team embodies the spirit of Eco Equilibrium, showing that innovation and survival can move forward hand in hand.
