Fiji is a tropical island nation in the South Pacific, made up of over 300 islands, with Viti Levu and Vanua Levu being the largest and most populated. Known for its vibrant culture, diverse traditions, beautiful beaches, and warm hospitality, Fiji is rich in both natural resources and cultural heritage. Its economy relies heavily on tourism, agriculture, and fisheries, all of which are closely connected to the environment. However, Fiji is also one of the country’s most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. Rising sea levels, stronger tropical cyclones, and coastal erosion pose serious threats to its communities and ecosystems. Many villages have already been forced to relocate due to flooding and saltwater intrusion. As a result, Fiji has taken a leadership role on the global stage, advocating for urgent climate action and supporting local initiatives that promote environmental protection and climate resilience.
In response to these growing climate challenges, Fiji is beginning to embrace the power of technology and innovation to find sustainable solutions. The advancement of robotics and digital tools offers new ways to monitor environmental changes, improve disaster response, and support climate adaptation efforts. Young innovators and student-led teams, such as Bulabot, are leading the way by using robotics to raise awareness and create practical systems that can help communities become more resilient. This movement reflects a broader shift in Fiji toward combining traditional knowledge with modern technology to protect the environment and secure a safer future for the next generation.
Pranav Kumar
BULA!!! My Name is Pranav Kumar, and I am 18 years old. I was brought up in the beautiful island of Fiji. In the Future I aspire to pursue a career in STEM as it is essential in solving real- world problems, driving innovation and preparing us for the future. With the first global challenge theme being, Eco Equilibrium this year, it helps to focus on protecting the biodiversity and finding STEM solutions for a thriving planet. The theme highlights the impact of climate change in places like rainforests and coral reefs including other biodiversity hotspots around the globe. As a Pacific Island Nation, Fiji is the home to vibrant coral reefs and diverse marine life as well as rich terrestrial biodiversity, this holds a special place in the hearts of every Fijian. As a proud Fijian I hope to promote STEM in the country and help to innovate solutions to safeguard natural resources and enhance ecosystems for future generations.
