Event Volunteers

Over 200 Volunteers staffed the inaugural 2017 FIRST Global Challenge at D.A.R. Constitution Hall in Washington, DC. As the event nears, we need your help! Volunteers made the event a success, and we are looking forward to another great year.


Registration for the 2018 FIRST Global Challenge in Mexico City is official open! Go to www.first.global/registration to sign-up! The event itself will run from August 15 – 18 at the Arena Ciudad de Mexico. Volunteer positions will likely run from August 14 – 18.

  1. Are background checks a requirement?
    • Yes, background checks are required of all volunteers 18 and older. They are free for the volunteer, and will be sent a link at a later date. We use the company Verified Volunteers.
  2. Does FIRST Global pay for volunteers to attend?
    • No, FIRST Global is not responsible for any costs to and from Mexico City, lodging costs, or some meal costs. FIRST Global does not sponsor Visas for Volunteers.
  3. Will Volunteers be provided food at the event?
    • Yes, lunch, water, and snacks will be provided. Volunteers will likely be on their own for breakfast and dinner.
  4. Who can volunteer?
    • We have positions for anyone 13 and older at the event. Many positions do no require any robot experience at all!
    • Minors who wish to attend without a parent or guardian need to contact volunteer@first.global for more information.
  5. How are the positions chosen?
    • Positions are chosen first by a person’s experience (if a role requires technical knowledge of a robot, the volunteer has to possess technical knowledge to be selected), and second on a first-come-first-served basis.
  6. What is the dress code?
    • Volunteers will be provided a t-shirt or something similar to wear at all times. Some positions may require different dress attire, but those affected will be notified during any training calls. Closed toe, closed heel shoes are also required (the comfier the better!). All volunteers will be issued a lanyard at the event that they must wear at all times for security and identification purposes.
  7. When will my position be confirmed?
    • Positions will be confirmed starting in May and the Volunteer will have two (2) weeks to confirm their attendance.
  8. Am I guaranteed a position at the FIRST Global Challenge?
    • Yes! Please keep in mind that if you sign up for a position that requires technical knowledge, and you do not possess technical knowledge, you will be assigned a position that does not require technical knowledge or skills.
