All-Girls Robotics Team to Partake in ‘FIRST Global Robotics Competition’

Ghana’s All-Girls Robotics team with support from STEMbees will be participating in the First Global Robotics Competition to be held in Mexico.

The competion will take off in August, with Ghana joining over 150 nations in the challenge entitled “Energy Impact”.

As part of the competition, each team will collaborate with two other nations to fuel power plants, activate renewable energy sources and fully construct and program a robot from a standardized kit of parts.

In a bid to ensure that the all-girls robotics team from Ghana get enough funding to partake in the competition, STEMbees held a cocktail fundraiser to support the girls.

The cocktail fundraiser was to help the team reach their goal of raising $25,000 to cover registration fees, visa application fees, food, lodging, a robot kit required for all teams amongst others.

Speaking at the fundraiser event, Mexico’s Ambassador to Ghana, Maria De Los Angeles Arriola Aguirre, said, it is a great honour for Mexico to host students from around the globe passionate about STEM for the FIRST Global Robotics Challenge.

“I am excited that an all-girls robotics team from Ghana will be represented at the competition again this year,” she said.

According to her, having young girls participate in the contest is a step forward for women’s empowerment .

She as a result urged individuals present at the fundraiser event to support the girls and give them the opportunity to make Ghana proud.

The all-girls robotics team is being mentored and supported by STEMbees, a Ghana-based organisation that engages primary and secondary school girls in STEM activities including 3D Design and Printing, Electronics, Robotics, Coding, Robotics, LEGO Education, and STEM Career Awareness.

It was founded in 2014 by three women; Linda Ansong, Angela Korateng and Lady-Omega Hammond.

STEMbees was started to empower young African girls in STEM and introduce them to a world of new career opportunities.
