01 Sep Russian Planet: FIRST Global Challenge 2020 for young engineers of Russia
For the third year in a row, the robotic club “Robomaster” named after Sofia Kovalevskaya represents the Russian Federation at the international youth robotics Olympiads “FIRST Global Challenge” under the flag of the Russian Federation.
The main goal of this youth competition is to develop an interest in STEM education, science, engineering, technology and programming among older students through solving practical problems.
After the first successful competitions in Washington in 2017, they were held in Mexico City in 2018 and in Dubai in 2019. However, in 2020, the coronavirus (COVID-19) made its own adjustments and, in order not to jeopardize the health of the participants, the competitions of teams from more than 100 countries are held online. In this difficult time for the world community, this form of competition is a unique opportunity to unite all national teams using modern means of communication. This is why the challenge for 2020 is to “CONNECTING COMMUNITIES” for youth passionate about robotics.
The program started on June 27 and will continue until September 25. During this period, national teams must complete a variety of assignments, including technical training, talking to professionals about the benefits of STEM education that combines elements of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. At the same time, team members, volunteers, supporters and sponsors have the opportunity to communicate with each other on social networks.
The participation of the guys from the team of our robotics club “Robomaster” in the FIRST Global festival program inspires them to get an education and a career in science, technology and technology. We invite passionate robotics boys and girls to join us on this exciting journey through the world of robotics in our fun interactive environment. You can create robots using high-tech kits, participate in online presentations when discussing topics related to the development of STEM education and its implementation in the educational process, in exchange of experience with like-minded people. The 2020 Olympics is a uniquely encompassing event for young engineers to learn together and innovate based on the benefits of the STEM education system.
The participation of young people in such international events is a real contribution to the preparation of the engineering reserve for the further development of Russia.

Egor: By participating in the FIRST Global Challenge, we gain valuable experience and a lot of knowledge that is necessary for the young generation of innovators.
Danil: Competitions taught me how to work in a team, solve complex technical problems in a short time. In addition, I learned how to work with new tools, studied a number of programs that will be very useful to me in my future studies and life.
Ivan: Participation in the FIRST Global Challenge helped me gain engineering skills, taught me to understand how to work effectively in a team when solving complex problems in the assembly of robots.
Yaroslav: Participation in competitions organized by FIRST Global is one of my successes in life and a great time in my life. I found many like-minded people among my peers from other countries. It was as if my eyes opened, the motivation to create and invent appeared.
What lessons have you learned?
Yaroslav: The main lesson that I have learned is “strength in unity.” When the team works together, we can create, create new incredible designs in a very short time. We develop critical thinking, we learn to do a lot of work – the skills that are necessary to prepare for future work and life.
Danil: During the preparation and participation in the prestigious international competition FIRST Global Challenge, in addition to new technical experience in the field of mechanics and programming, I learned how exciting robotics can be even at such a high international level.
Dima: I realized that STEM, as a modern education system, is a chance to learn and develop skills and a way of thinking that will give us the opportunity to collaborate with people from other countries to solve the global problems that the world faces in the 21st century.
One of the goals of the international competitions held is to promote the STEM education system (science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics). “It is used in most of the developed countries of the world. It is also known in our country, but it has not yet been adopted in the official education system – we are a little late, ”says Nikolai Smetanin, head of the Russian delegation, founder of the Moscow robotic club“ Robomaster ”, public adviser to the Pokrovskoye-Streshnevo administration in Moscow.
In the interests of promoting the initiative to create a city resource center for STEM education, we turned to the deputy IT center of the education system and the chairman of the board of directors of educational institutions in the city of Khimki, Moscow region, for help and advice. During the discussion, we expressed our thoughts on how it is possible to supplement and improve technological education in our region through the formation of a single educational STEM platform for introducing the approach into the educational process. This would allow organizing methodological training for teachers, organizing circles of robotics, programming, 3D modeling, prototyping and 3D printing. On the basis of this center, it would be possible to conduct lessons on robot assembly technology for children, as well as organize sports competitions in robotics.
We managed to find support from our opponents that school education should motivate both boys and girls to master modern high-tech professions. At the same time, it is necessary to solve this problem on the basis of an updated concept of technological education at school, because after graduation, children should already have basic knowledge and experience in the technical field. It is this knowledge and skills of youth that determine the future development of the country. The goal of a modern school is to show that the world of professions is diverse, and, having gained knowledge and experience on the basis of STEM education, young people can engage in any creative activity.
The introduction of STEM-initiatives in educational institutions at electives and additional hobby classes will help teach young people to analyze and synthesize information, to move away from clip thinking. This can be achieved using, among other things, research methods in teaching.
Officials approved our idea and invited us to participate in a meeting to discuss the concept of a STEM education resource center at the next meeting of heads of educational institutions with the participation of the mayor of the city. We strongly believe that this important project will be implemented and will become the starting point for the development of STEM education in our region.
