Girls Robotic Team Wraps Up Successful Tour Abroad

The Afghan robotic girls team returned home after wrapping up a successful tour in Canada and the US.

“We participated in the competition in New Mexico where we won first position and won a gold medal, in Turkey we also came first,” said Leda Azizi, head of the robotic team.

“We designed our robots in a short period of time, we attended competitions in Canada and then travelled to the US, so we had little time to compare ourselves to other countries to participate in the events,” said Helai Barakzai, Head of Social Networking Group of Afghan Robotic Girls

“Competitors are amazed when they saw us taking part in such big events and winning awards,” said Azizullah Mehraban, a trainer of the team.

The Afghan robotics team won the “Entrepreneur Award” at Europe’s biggest robot festival in November last year.

In July 2017, the girls also won another well-recognized award at an international robotics competition in Washington.

The Afghan girls robotics team were warmly welcomed at an international event in Amsterdam in the Netherlands in October last year.

Researchers, scientists and inventors from 100 countries attended the two-day event.

Fatima Qaderyan, a member of the robotics team, made an emotional speech at the event where she talked about her late father and said he was a hero who had supported her to achieve her dreams.

Qaderyan’s father was killed last year in a Daesh attack in Herat.

“We participated at the competition (in the United States) and returned home with a medal. This changed the view of the (Afghan) leaders and the people about women. It helped to reduce some restrictions for women in many families,” she said.

The robotics team also attended the FIRST Global Challenge — a three-day international robotics competition that aimed at promoting science and technology among youths worldwide.
