Young people from the Itapúa department who are part of an Olympic robotics team participate, on behalf of Paraguay, in the FIRST Global world competition, which includes participants from 193 countries. The competition should have taken place in Japan, but due to the covid pandemic, it is held in virtual format.

“We are proud that the Itapúa team has been designated to represent our country by the official ambassador of FIRST Global Paraguay, mechatronics engineer Yan Claude Bajac, for the part of robot design and construction, together with José Almada , in the programming part, by the National University of Asunción ”, said Víctor Hugo Velázquez, coordinator of the Paraguayan team.

Velázquez stressed that Paraguay is ranked number 27 out of 175 countries, and there is interest in climbing to better positions in the international tournament.

“If we manage to enter the top 20 it will be historic for our country,” he said.

He said that this month the last competitions are held, the last of which will be on September 26.

The teams had to travel to participate in the meeting, which lasts four days, but due to the pandemic, it was decided to develop the tournament virtually over three months.

The Paraguayan Olympic robotics team is made up of Rosa Cabrera, Enrique Scholler, Kevin Aquino, Leonardo Gómez de la Fuente Leiva, Junior Sanabria, Milagros Velázquez, Víctor Samuel Velázquez, Víctor Manuel Velázquez and instructor Víctor Hugo Velázquez.

The team’s specialty is pre-industrial robots, and it encourages the practice and publicity of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).

“Today we have a challenge to meet, such as making the country’s youth and children known about this Olympic competition, so that they can become interested in STEM, and also the girls, since the team is mixed, and it is important the participation of women, and break that existing barrier,” said Víctor Hugo Velázquez.

The Paraguayan Olympic team has the support of the Paraguayan Space Agency, chaired by Colonel Liduvino Vielman, engineer Jorge Kurita and Guatemalan cosmonaut Vinicio Montoya.
