28 Oct Ocean Cleaning Robot: Ukrainian Kids Are Some of the Best Robotics in the World
(Translated from Ukrainian)
The Ukrainian team became one of the best at the FIRST Global Challenge in Robotics, held in Dubai (UAE) the day before.
The national team of Ukraine won 10th place among 189 countries.
Ukrainian children have built work that cleans the ocean of plastic.
They were cleaning the planet
The theme of the FIRST Global Challenge Olympics was to clean the ocean surface of plastic and other polluting materials.
The teams carried out the mission: using a robot to collect large and small balls that symbolize garbage, took them to special barges and tossed them at different levels of the tower depending on the size.
Each team played nine matches in the alliance with two more countries that changed each time.
After six completed missions, the Ukrainian national team decided to take a chance and re-engineered the work.
The emphasis was on collecting large balloons. During three hours of hard work, the robot became more efficient and stable, which helped Ukrainian teenagers to gain more points and significantly advance and enter the Play-offs of the Robotics Olympiad.
From Ukraine, four children aged 15 to 18 took part in the Robotics Olympiad: Alexander Plotnitsky, Victor Zhernokleev, Valentin Rybinsky from Kharkiv and Yulia Shevchenko from Kiev.
Participants of the Ukrainian national team carefully prepared for the Olympics, trained and participated in many competitions in Ukraine, they attended the STEM-school INVENTOR.
What is the Olympics?
The FIRST Global Challenge, which is attended by teams from around the world, has been held for the third time. Prior to this, robotics competitions, involving children ages 14 to 18, took place in the United States and Mexico.
The themes of past games have been alternative energy and saving the world from the water crisis.
The purpose of the FIRST Global Challenge is to increase the knowledge of mathematics and engineering among children.
Organizers of such Olympic Games believe that in the future, these children will become the scientific leaders who will solve the problems of the planet: from food security and access to clean water to finding the best drugs and providing cyberspace.
Ukraine has participated in the FIRST Global Challenge for the third time.
In 2018, the Ukrainian team won first place at the WRO-2018 Robotics Olympiad in Thailand.
