Translated from Dutch.

This year the Young Help Suriname (YHS) foundation is also planning to allow Suriname to participate in the 2019 FIRST Global ‘Robotics’ Challenge (FGC) for the third time.

The foundation has recently been able to successfully register our country to participate in this competition in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, and will run from 24 to 27 October.

YHS is the official Suriname counterpart of FGC. With the support of the IDB, Staatsolie, Baitali Group and RCM Constructie, the foundation has succeeded in achieving participation.

The Robot kit from Suriname has already been ordered and en route from Hong Kong. In anticipation of this, proto-typing with the 2017 and 2018 kit will take place. It will take a while before we have a final robot design for the 2019 Suriname Robotic machine.

The foundation, which has been training students in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) and Robotics skills for 3 years, has had 11 students undergo preparation training (the Tech Genius Project) in the first half of this year.

The 2019 Suriname Robotics team will be selected from, among others, this group, which will travel together with a Lead Technical Mentor and Team Manager. In 2017, the Suriname team finished in the top 50, while in 2018 it finished in 103.

In 2018, Suriname’s robot was also 1 of 54 robots out of 161 with the highest scoring points.

YHS is convinced that this year too they will succeed in getting all the necessary finances together so that Suriname can remain part of the global FG platform.

The FGC games may be a ‘high point’ where our young people gain extra inspiration and become aware of the many possibilities of partnerships and make use of them.

Our young people have proven that they have the potential; YHS strives to achieve open doors for more success for them.
