International robotics competitions are based on the 14 challenges of engineering in the 21st century
Mexico City, July 24, 2018.- FIRST Global, an international non-profit organization focused on the promotion of science, technology, engineering and mathematics, announced today that it seeks to develop a passion for these disciplines. in more than two billion young people around the world, through the organization and dissemination of annual robotics competitions.
These competences intend that teams of young people from secondary and high school around the world solve challenges related to the 14 major challenges of engineering in the 21st century – identified by the Engineering Academies of the United States, the United Kingdom and China – for ensure the prosperity of future generations.
These challenges are grouped into four themes: sustainability, health, safety and quality of life.
The 14 major challenges are: reduce the costs of solar energy, develop energy from nuclear fusion, capture carbon from the atmosphere to reduce the greenhouse effect, restore the balance of the nitrogen cycle, ensure the supply of drinking water and improve the infrastructure of the cities without environmental deterioration.
Similarly, it includes the development of computer systems related to health, improve medicines and better understand the functioning of the human brain to know the development of certain diseases.
Solutions to prevent and respond to nuclear attacks, a more secure cyberspace and develop new virtual reality methods for learning and entertainment are also considered.
Finally, it is considered to improve personalized education systems and develop tools to promote scientific discoveries.
This year, the event takes place around energy efficiency, so that more than 1,000 young people from more than 180 countries meet between August 16 and 18 at the Mexico City Arena, at the FIRST Global Robotics World Challenge 2018 Mexico City, in order to create robots that allow them to win the competition of the “Energy Impact”.
FIRST Global believes that the World Robotics involves much more than building robots.
While young people learn to find solutions for big global problems, they work as a team, exchange ideas, divide work according to the advantages of each participant, trust in the performance of others and complement their knowledge, attributes that are increasingly necessary in the current world.
The World of Robotics teaches young people to work in an environment of healthy competition, as well as to cooperate with other teams to learn to add the knowledge and skills of all involved to obtain superior results.
FIRST Global seeks to awaken the passion for science and technology not only in the participants in the World Robotics, but, through the dissemination of the activities of the event, spread this passion to more than two billion young people to global level.
Ricardo Salinas, president of Grupo Salinas and founding member of FIRST Global, is the host of the FIRST Global Challenge 2018 in Mexico City, and is firmly committed to contributing to the formation of the next generation of scientific and technological leaders.
Mr. Salinas believes that the promotion of scientific knowledge will result in the generation of greater shared prosperity in Mexico and the rest of the world.
