Team Antigua and Barbuda 2023 🇦🇬

Hello FIRST Global – Team Antigua and Barbuda (DadliBots) here – we met each other at the TechByte Summer Camp 2023 which was an awesome STEM and business themed boot camp that enlightened us on the many possibilities of engineering through robotics.

We had so much fun collaborating with our peers, as we brainstormed solutions that could help us achieve the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by addressing four major global challenges (Water, Earth, Solar, Air) negatively affecting Small Island Developing States (SIDS) like our home Antigua (Ann-tee-ga) and Barbuda (Bar-bue-daa) – “Where the Beach Is Just the Beginning.”

MEET OUR TEAM
Madison (Team Leader) – I’m 14 years old, enjoy organizing and I attend the Island Academy School where my favorite subject is Math. I love animals and learning about construction. I’ve always wanted to be a veterinarian surgeon but since attending TechByte I am seriously considering also becoming an engineer. The Hydrogen Horizons challenge is very interesting and I’m really amazed at how we could utilize hydrogen to provide clean energy. Governments definitely need to increase education on the harmful effects of fossil fuels and I’m really looking forward to winning some awards at the FGC 2023.

Alric (Lead Engineer) – I’m 15 years old and I attend the Antigua Grammar School. I want to be a civil engineer and learning about STEM, computer aided programs or even robotics has been really exciting. The theme for FGC 2023 really reminds me of a video game called Horizons Zero Dawn where robots could take over the world and become more inclusive in our daily lives. I think that it’s really important that we avoid fossil fuels and switch faster to more renewable sources like solar. I can’t wait to experience all the different cultures, robot designs and people from around the world when we compete in Singapore.

Jayden (Lead Driver) – I’m 14 years old and I attend the Antigua Grammar School. Web design and full stack coding is what I love, so I enjoy learning more about ways that I can improve my skills towards becoming a software engineer. I’ve definitely got the best role on our team, since I get to utilize our end product on the field in competition. I love the theme Hydrogen Horizons, it’s interesting and teaches us about various energy alternatives versus fossil fuels. I’m very proud to represent my country, as I’ve never done it before and I believe its going to be a great experience for us all.
Nathan (Lead Inventory) – I’m 16 years old and I attend the Antigua Grammar School. I’m very good at managing and keeping things in order, so I’ve always imagined a career in the Marketing or Business sector. TechByte summer camp was really an eye opener for me and it peaked my interest even more in STEM as I do enjoy playing games about building stuff. I also didn’t realize how cool it was that we could pull water atoms apart and use hydrogen in so many different ways. I really believe more developed countries should assist less developed ones with support to tackle the energy crisis and I can’t wait to be inspired by the other FGC teams.

Maliya (Lead Programmer) – I’m 14 years old and I attend the Baptist Academy School. I honestly haven’t been thinking about a future career but since attending TechByte Summer Camp I’ve been considering becoming an engineer for sure. I’m very hands on and so coding is something I enjoy doing. I think STEM is the wave of the future and I definitely intend to be onboard. The FGC is really amazing, as it’s opening our minds to think of different forms of energy and ways to make them cheaper for everyone to access. I’m looking forward to meeting other progressive young people and creating links for the future when we meet in Singapore.
