04 May Team British Virgin Islands 2023 🇻🇬
The British Virgin Islands (BVI) is a British Overseas Territory located in the Caribbean, geographically part of the Virgin Islands archipelago, and located in the Leeward Islands of the Lesser Antilles and part of the West Indies. The BVI comprises around 60 tropical islands, ranging in size from the largest, Tortola, 12 miles long and 3 miles wide, to tiny uninhabited islets of about 58 square miles. There are four major islands, Tortola, Virgin Gorda, Anegada and Jost Van Dyke. The islands all present various physical features, including low mountains, coral reefs, and barrier beaches. The highest point is Sage Mountain (1,709 feet), on Tortola. Team BVI is from the island of Tortola; comprising of educators and 4 students from the Elmore High School and the Virgin Islands School of Technical Studies. These students (ranging from 15-16 years old) have always been passionate about robotics and artificial intelligence and are excited to participate in this venture. These students include:
● Denae Scatliffe is a 15-year-old eleventh-grader who has always been interested in science and technology. She enjoys solving problems and learning how things work. For hobbies, Denae loves listening to music and spending time on the beach. She has always been curious, creative and analytical, assets that contributed to her winning this year’s Annual Science Fair. All these strengths make her beneficial to this team. She is also interested in entrepreneurship and starting her own business someday.
● Amani Brown is a 15-year old Principal Honor Student who is currently in Grade 11. He loves technology for the simple fact that the world is going into a new era of technologically advanced methods and ways of completing tasks. Outside of academics, Amani enjoys activities such as sailing, martial arts where he is currently a member of Purple Dragon, electrical engineering and music which has afforded him the opportunity to play the bass guitar in the school’s senior concert band and jazz band. He is also a member of the Shooting Stars Steel Orchestra where he plays the tenor pan. Amani has taken up subjects such as information technology and electronics which has broadened his understanding of why different types of circuits are used in certain situations as well as how to create them. Through the Ministry of Education’s push to incorporate STEAM learning, Amani has grown a passion for robotics after engaging in STEAM related activities. Amani’s dream is to be a licensed and certified cruise-ship captain with the hopes of sailing into his hometown of the British Virgin Islands which is a renowned tourist destination as well as owning a few businesses.
● Jayron Gibson is a 16 year old student currently in grade 11. He enjoys beach swimming and exercise. Most of his empty days are filled with lifting weights or running. Mr.Gibson loves to help out with anything especially when it comes to technology. He excels quickly in school in his IT work and the other subjects he loves.
● K’Dyah James is a 16 year old student who is currently in 11th grade and attends the Virgin Islands School of Technical Studies. She is very interested in doing hair and makeup. She is one of the top students in her grade. She is very interested in Math and problem solving. In K’Dyah’s free time she likes to eat, watch movies and watch very interesting videos online. Whenever she gets the chance she likes to go to the beach and enjoy the scenery. She is very family oriented and loves to spend time with her mother. And something else about K’Dyah is that she is always open to new experiences and ideas.
Team BVI participates this year for the first time and is excited to be a part of this global event, collaborating with students from diverse backgrounds and showcasing their skills in building and programming. They are ready to contribute to the worldwide effort to solve the world’s problems through STEAM.
