Team British Virgin Islands 2024 🇻🇬

The British Virgin Islands (BVI) is a British Overseas Territory located in the Caribbean, geographically part of the Virgin Islands archipelago, and located in the Leeward Islands of the Lesser Antilles and part of the West Indies. The BVI comprises around 60 tropical islands, ranging in size from the largest, Tortola, 12 miles long and 3 miles wide, to tiny uninhabited islets of about 58 square miles. There are four major islands, Tortola, Virgin Gorda, Anegada and Jost Van Dyke. The islands all present various physical features, including low mountains, coral reefs, and barrier beaches. The highest point is Sage Mountain (1,709 feet), on Tortola.

Team BVI is from the island of Tortola; comprising educators and 5 students from the Elmore High School and the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College. These students (ranging from 14-17 years old) have always been passionate about robotics and artificial intelligence and are excited to participate in this venture.

These students include:

● Michaela Jack is a dynamic and driven 14-year-old eighth-grade student who is consistently on the Principal Honor List. She has a passion for dancing, reading, and spending time at the beach and aspires to become a world-class chef. Recently, she has developed a keen interest in robotics, a field that combines her love for technology with her problem-solving skills. Michaela’s newfound passion for robotics broadens her skill set and aligns with her ambition to make a meaningful impact in her country. Her diverse interests and determination suggest a bright future full of potential for making a significant difference in whatever path she chooses.

● Amani Brown is a 16-year-old Principal Honor Student currently in Grade 12. He loves technology for the simple fact that the world is going into a new era of technologically advanced methods and ways of completing tasks. Outside of academics, Amani enjoys activities such as sailing and martial arts, where he is currently a member of Purple Dragon, electrical engineering and music which has afforded him the opportunity to play the bass guitar in the school’s senior concert band and jazz band. He is also a member of the Shooting Stars Steel Orchestra where he plays the tenor pan. Amani has taken up subjects such as information technology and electronics, which has broadened his understanding of why different types of circuits are used in certain situations and how to create them. Through the Ministry of Education’s push to incorporate STEAM learning, Amani has grown a passion for robotics after engaging in STEAM-related activities. Amani’s dream is to be a licensed and certified cruise ship captain with the hopes of sailing into his hometown of the British Virgin Islands, which is a renowned tourist destination, and owning a few businesses.

● Judiah Case is a 16-year-old high-achieving student in the eleventh grade, consistently earning a place on the Principal Honor List. She is deeply passionate about art, an activity that allows her to express her creativity and imagination. Her artistic endeavors demonstrate her appreciation for beauty and detail as well as her love for art; illustrating a balance between technical knowledge and creative expression. Her journey into the world of robotics began through a summer camp at her school, organized as part of the Ministry of Education’s initiative to promote STEAM education. This exposure to robotics sparked a deep interest in the field, opening up a new area of exploration for Judiah. Her engagement with robotics has not only deepened her appreciation for the technical world but has also fueled her desire to learn more about how technology works and how it can be applied in innovative ways.

● Kh’Mouri Anthony is a 15-year-old dynamic and driven high honor 11th-grade student. Beyond academics, Kh’Mouri has many interests that showcase his diverse talents. He enjoys sports, especially basketball and boxing. His dedication to sports reflects his strong teamwork skills, discipline, and competitive nature. Kh’Mouri also now has a keen interest in robotics after attending the British Virgin Islands Robotics Summer Camp 2024. His passion for technology and innovation highlights his analytical mind and problem-solving abilities, showing a curiosity about how things work and a desire to be at the forefront of modern advancements. Kh’Mouri also enjoys video games, where he engages in strategic thinking and creativity. Music is another key aspect of Kh’Mouri’s life. As a saxophone player, he expresses his creativity and dedication through music, adding an artistic dimension to his already impressive array of talents.

● Elyon Jones graduated with honors from the BVI Seventh-day Adventist School and is now a 17-year-old in his final year at H. Lavity Stoutt Community College, where he’s pursuing an Associate’s Degree in General Science. His ultimate goal is to become a mechanical engineer, designing technologies to address human needs. With a passion for AI, technology, and robotics, Elyon is focused on developing innovations that simplify everyday life. In his downtime, Elyon enjoys exploring new music, and appreciating the creativity of different artists and genres. He also loves gaming, using it as a way to hone his skills in teamwork, strategy, and maintaining a competitive mindset. Elyon often passes time reading Manga and Manhwa, which allows him to view life from fresh perspectives. Socially, he values spending time with friends, family and enjoys meeting new people.

Team BVI is thrilled to be participating in this global event for the second time! They’re excited to collaborate with students from all over the world, sharing ideas and showcasing their talents in building and programming. Together, they’re eager to contribute to the worldwide effort to tackle some of the world’s biggest challenges through STEAM.
