Kenya has participated in the FIRST Global Challenge since 2017, and this year we are once again excited to be a part of FGC!

To us, the FIRST Global Challenge is more than robots; it is an opportunity to shape our futures, our country, and our continent through the power of STEM and collaboration. We are motivated to tackle this year’s theme, “Feeding The Future,” which is highly relevant to our country.

Our team is made up of 15 teenagers, aged 15 to 18, with a pool of mentors assisting us in navigating the various aspects of the competition. Since many high school students want to benefit from this opportunity, we are participating in STEM outreach programs with other organisations to spread the gospel of STEM and robotics throughout all 47 Kenyan counties.

This year, we ran robotics boot camps during the April school holidays and are looking forward to organizing boot camps each school holiday and a local robotics competition using previous REV robotics kits.

To promote this year’s theme, we have identified actionable steps we can take, such as managing food wastage, which we recognize as a significant challenge. We are collaborating with farmers to identify the challenges they face and how we can apply technology to solve them.

FGC has opened our eyes to imagine a better world that we can build for ourselves and future generations. To us, STEM is a powerful tool to change the world, and we are inspired by Dean Kamen’s words (FIRST Global founder) that “we do not use kids to build robots; we use robots to build kids.”

We are honoured to be the pioneers advocating for robotics as a sport in our country. We are reaching out to relevant stakeholders to promote this, and we want to get Kenyans excited about robotics.

As Team Kenya, we are not limited to building a robot for FGC 2024; our aspirations are big, and we want to be STEM frontiers in Kenya. We are excited to collaborate with other teams and are ready to take on the challenge.

In short, we are energetic and ready to conquer FGC 2024 and inspire as many young people in Kenya as possible!
