Team Sierra Leone 2024 🇸🇱


Team Sierra Leone consists of five talented students from different high Schools and two dedicated mentors. We come from diverse cultures but we share the same passion for science and technology. Our members are a group of energetic, fun and hardworking individuals who are excited about robotics and STEM.

Coming from a country known for its history, cultural heritage and natural resources, Sierra Leone has a tropical and with a variety of environments ranging from savanna to rainforests.
This year’s theme for the FIRST Global Challenge — Feeding the Future — resonates well with our President flagship program Feed Salone initiative, which aimed at achieving food sovereignty and inclusive economic growth:

  • Decrease Food Imports: By boosting local production, the initiative aims to reduce reliance on food imports.
  • Increase Exports: It seeks to enhance agricultural productivity to fuel economic growth.
  • Create Jobs for Women and Youth: The program aims to generate employment opportunities.
  • Alleviate Hunger & Malnutrition: By improving food security, it aims to combat hunger and malnutrition.
  • Build a Resilient Food System: The initiative focuses on creating a sustainable and robust food system in Sierra Leone.
  • The team is excited to represent Sierra Leone in the 2024 FIRST Global Challenge in Athens, Greece because it is an opportunity to learn more about robotics, modern technologies and STEM fields.

    STUDENTS

    Daniel Raynold Falama is a Student of the Prince of Wales secondary school Freetown, Sierra Leone. He is an exceptional individual who currently serves as the team captain for the Sierra Leone robotics team. With an unwavering passion for technology and innovation, Daniel stands out as a remarkable talent. His fascination with the problem-solving potential of technology has driven him towards a career in software engineering. What sets Daniel apart is his unwavering dedication to his craft. He approaches each project with curiosity and an insatiable thirst for knowledge. Daniel’s commitment extends to the exploration of STEM robotics, where he consistently strives to expand his knowledge and skills. He is eager to showcase his creativity and abilities at the upcoming event in Greece 2024. Competition reflects his relentless pursuit of continuous growth and achievement. Daniel wants to become an entrepreneur and software developer in the future.

    Christian Kamara is a student from the Rosetta Senior secondary school in Freetown, Sierra Leone. He has been deeply involved in the world of STEM robotics for a significant period. His passion for robotics has driven him to actively participate in various robotics competitions held at his school. He developed strong critical thinking skills and the ability to address important challenges within his school and community. He is a STEM advocate and eager to leverage his knowledge and contribution to Sierra Leone’s participation in Greece.

    Valdie Samuel Rodney Valcarcel is a secondary school pupil of the International School Limited in Freetown, Sierra Leone. He possesses a profound enthusiasm for STEM robotics. Valdie’s relentless curiosity revolves around the transformative potential of STEM in today’s world. He actively immerses himself in robotics events organized at his school and ardently seeks opportunities to apply his knowledge to Sierra Leone’s involvement in robotics. He is the Media planner of the Sierra Leone robotic team and he wants to be an engineer when he grows up.

    Hadiatu Barrie, a secondary student from Zadet Secondary School in Freetown, Sierra Leone. She’s deeply immersed in the world of STEM robotics. Through her active engagement in various robotics events at her school, she has developed strong critical thinking skills and the ability to address important challenges within her school and community. With an enduring passion for STEM robotics. Hadiatu is highly motivated to utilize her knowledge and expertise to control Sierra Leone’s involvement in the Greece 2024 event. She became interested in robotics after an outreach program on STEM at their school. Hadiatu would like to be an innovator when she grows up. She is the team designer.

    Martina Precious Nenneh Lavahun is a secondary school student of the St. Joseph Secondary School Freetown, Sierra Leone. She is a member of the STEM club in her school. Her deep involvement in STEM and innovation has honed her critical thinking skills, empowering her to implement change in pressing issues within her school and community. With a long-standing passion for STEM robotics, she has actively participated in numerous robotics event at her school. Motivated by her drive to make a difference, Martina is eager to leverage her knowledge and contribute to Sierra Leone’s participation in Greece. She is a programmer and wants to master the act of robotics in the future.

    MENTORS

    Susan Kargbo, currently serving as the team Mentor for the Team Sierra Leone robotics team, is a dedicated staff member at the National Commission for Children (NCC). She is a passionate advocate for technology and the arts. With her extensive experience as a dynamic STEM educator, Susan has consistently achieved exceptional academic outcomes and is renowned for her unwavering dedication to her students’ achievements. She has previously imparted her knowledge to numerous FIRST Global students, teaching them the importance of critical thinking in addressing pressing problems. Susan eagerly anticipates the opportunity to guide and mentor her team for the upcoming 2024 competition in Athens Greece. Her ultimate goal is to inspire and empower the team members, helping them realize their full potential.

    Emmanuel Steven Kamanda is a dedicated mentor who works as an Electronic Engineer at UNIPOD, a fab lab and innovation company. Emmanuel has brought a wealth of knowledge and experience from his extensive background in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, having graduated with first class honors from the faculty of Engineering and Architecture at Fourah Bay College, University of Sierra Leone. His technical skills span web and app development, python, React JS and more.
