Meet Sarah, Erick, Samira, Doreen, and Munira, a team of bright and passionate students representing the United Republic of Tanzania in the 2024 FIRST Global Challenge. With diverse talents in STEM, robotics, engineering, and leadership, they are poised to showcase their innovation and problem-solving skills on a global stage. Join us in supporting this exceptional team as they embark on this exciting journey to make a difference in the world of technology and beyond.
Sarah, a dedicated and enthusiastic student from Zanaki High School in Dar es Salaam, aspires to become a software engineer. She has identified her strengths in STEM subjects and Artificial Intelligence, making her a valuable asset as a team captain. Sarah’s background reflects her potential to excel in leadership roles, showcasing her adeptness at guiding and inspiring others towards common goals. Passionate about utilizing technology to overcome challenges, Sarah’s leadership skills shine through as she navigates the world of robotics with vision and determination.
Erick, a distinguished member of Alpha Schools, proudly embraces the title of a computer scientist, a nickname he has earned through his unwavering dedication to the art of coding and programming. Driven by his distinctive passion for transforming ideas into reality, Erick is a self-inspired individual with a relentless pursuit of excellence. His solid motivation and powerful interest in materializing concepts into tangible outcomes show his commitment to innovation. Firmly rooted in the belief in the strength of collaborative efforts, Erick thrives in environments that foster teamwork and collective achievement.
Samira, a diligent Form Three student from Mugabe Secondary School, aspires to pursue a career as a mechanical engineer. Driven by a desire to apply her knowledge towards solving various challenges within the community, she firmly believes in the transformative power of STEM disciplines. Samira’s adept design skills and engineering expertise serve as invaluable assets to our team she collaborates with, showcasing her commitment to innovation and problem-solving. Additionally, her interest in robotics further amplifies her passion for applying technology to address real-world issues.
Doreen, a brilliant student from Sega Secondary School, is not only an advocate for STEM but also a driving force within our team. Her eagerness to engage in new experiences and learn from others sets her apart, making her a vital asset. Doreen also serves as our team spokesperson, effectively communicating our vision and goals to others. Her discovery of robotics as a superior field for tackling real-world challenges further underscores her commitment to leveraging technology for impactful solutions.
Munira, a highly inspired Form One student, is driven by a deep passion for creation and innovation. She plays an essential role as the driver within our team, enjoying robotics as she firmly believes that STEM is the cornerstone for the future world. With a strong aspiration to not only utilize STEM for herself but also to pave the way for other young individuals, Munira expresses a true visionary in harnessing technology for positive change.
MENTORS
Mkufu is an experienced expert with an electromechanical engineering background. Mkufu has been working in the energy industry for more than 13 years, and her knowledge of sustainable energy solutions is extensive. She joined the STEM journey with the IET-Women’s Chapter because she is dedicated to promoting gender diversity and inclusion in engineering. She actively works to close the gender gap in engineering fields and STEM education among young girls. As the creator of the program “Women in Energy and Climate Action,” Mkufu’s advocacy goes beyond her work in the energy sector to include the empowerment of women in this field. Since the FGC’s founding in 2017, Mkufu has served as Tanzania’s FIRST Global robotic challenge team’s main point of contact and technical mentor.
Juliana is passionate about STEM education and comes from a background in telecommunications engineering. She established the “STEMSHIP Foundation” to empower and inspire the next generation, particularly in STEM and mathematics, after realizing the transformative potential of STEM areas. Juliana collaborates with the IET-Women Chapter to further her love of STEM. Many students have been inspired to pursue professions in technology and engineering by Juliana’s creative methods of mentoring and teaching, which have helped them reach their full potential. Her primary responsibilities on the team are to share her expertise and inspire a passion for STEM fields.
A bright young scientist with a background in computer science, Hajra is dedicated to closing the gender gap in the information and communication technology (ICT) industry. Her commitment to this cause is demonstrated by her active participation in campaigns that inspire young girls and more women to pursue careers in computer science and technology. Hajra’s achievements serve as a testament to the value of varied viewpoints and skill sets in advancing technology. Her responsibility on the team is to use her knowledge of computer science to the fullest and encourage other young women to pursue their ICT dreams by overcoming obstacles.
For Tanzania’s FIRST Global robotic challenge team, Mkufu, Juliana, and Hajra make up a dynamic trio of mentors. A supportive and encouraging environment is created where young minds can flourish, innovate, and have a significant effect on the robotics and technology industry by their combined knowledge, enthusiasm for STEM education, and dedication to gender equality.
